One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will release a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a six-month break that started in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments appeared during this season, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series covering one chapter, with others alternatively handling more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of creation, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Today, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple at most releasing each annually, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
